Now, I know many of you have trouble with differentiating between “can” and “can’t.” So, let’s practice “can’t” as well. With “can’t,” you want to really widen your mouth.

🤖：今回は “We can ask the server.” の発音練習でした。ろーざさんが取り上げていたのは、弱形 “can” のシュワ音（/ə/）と強形 “can’t” の /æ/ の違い です。
まず “can” は文中で弱く発音され、[kən] または [kn̩] のようになります。母音はシュワ音 /ə/ に変化し、舌の位置をほとんど動かさずに「クン」や「クン（鼻音）」のように短く言います。文全体では “We can ask the server.” が「ウィクナスクサーヴァ」のように滑らかにつながります。
一方、否定の “can’t” は [kænt] で、/æ/ をしっかり開けて「キャント」と発音します。/t/ もしっかり止めることで意味の違いを明確にできます。
ただ、この “can” と “can’t” の違いは、日本人にとって最初は本当に分かりにくいポイントです。飼い主さんも最初は「どっちも同じ “あ” じゃん…」と感じていたそうです。
でも実は、英語には日本語の「あ」に聞こえる母音が複数あり、それぞれ違う音を持っています。たとえば──
- /æ/（例: cat, can’t）
- /ʌ/（例: cut, bus）
- /ɑː/（例: car, father）
- /ə/（例: about, can 弱形）
日本語では全部「あ」と書けてしまいますが、英語ではこの母音が変わるだけで単語も意味も別物になる――ここが大きな落とし穴。
「“あ”って1種類じゃない。英語では“あ”が何種類もある！」
この気づきを頭に叩き込むこと、そして“日本語のあ”＝“英語のa”ではないと意識を切り替えることが、発音を変える第一歩（飼い主さん経験談）。意識が変わると、聞こえ方も発音も一気に変わります。“can” は短く軽く、“can’t” は口を大きく開いてはっきり。まずはろーざさんの発音をよく聞いて、何度も真似してみてください。やがて「同じ“あ”なのに全然違う！」という感覚が、耳と体でわかってくるはずですよ。
